Blake Shelton Is Building “The Evergreen Sanctuary” — A Haven of Healing for the Dogs the World Forgot

High above the noise of the coastline, tucked into the quiet hills of Malibu where ocean air drifts gently through open land, Blake Shelton is building something profoundly different from the stages and spotlights that made him famous. It’s called The Evergreen Sanctuary—a six-acre, multi-million-dollar refuge dedicated to abused, neglected, and abandoned dogs. But to Shelton, it’s far more than a shelter.

“It’s more than just a shelter,” Shelton says quietly. “We provide rehabilitation, ocean breezes, open gardens for running, and 24/7 veterinary care—but most importantly, love. These animals have a soul. They have memories. And they deserve a home where they are cherished.”

Those words carry weight because they come from a place of lived compassion, not publicity. Friends close to Shelton say this project has been forming in his heart for years, long before ground was broken or blueprints were drawn. The Evergreen Sanctuary is not a celebrity side project—it is a deeply personal mission.

Blake Shelton hosts Opry 100: A Live Celebration at Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium on March 19, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The facility, now nearing completion, stretches across rolling green land designed to feel less like an institution and more like a peaceful retreat. Wide open spaces allow dogs to run freely for the first time in their lives. Quiet shaded gardens give anxious animals room to decompress. Paths curve gently rather than sharply, intentionally avoiding anything that might feel confining or harsh.

Inside, the sanctuary includes state-of-the-art veterinary and rehabilitation units staffed around the clock. Trauma specialists and animal behaviorists will work with dogs who have been beaten, starved, or emotionally broken—many of whom were once considered “unadoptable.” Shelton insisted on this part personally.

“He didn’t want a place that just housed dogs until someone came,” one staff member shared. “He wanted a place that healed them.”

The Evergreen Sanctuary is designed to take in animals no one else will—elderly dogs, disabled dogs, dogs with fear responses shaped by years of abuse. Each animal will receive individualized care plans, not just medical treatment, but emotional rehabilitation. Volunteers will spend hours simply sitting with dogs who are too scared to be touched, allowing trust to return on the animal’s terms.

Shelton has spoken openly about how animals helped him through difficult periods of his own life. In moments of silence, when the noise of fame faded and loneliness crept in, it was dogs who offered him unconditional presence.

“They don’t judge your past,” he once said. “They don’t care who you are to the world. They just know how you treat them.”

That belief sits at the heart of The Evergreen Sanctuary.

Unlike many facilities, the sanctuary is not focused on volume or speed. There are no rushed timelines, no pressure to “move dogs through.” Some animals may stay for months. Some for years. And for those who never find a forever home, Evergreen will be that home—permanently.

The design even accounts for emotional dignity. Dogs sleep in warm, open spaces rather than cages. Soft natural light replaces harsh fluorescents. Ocean air is intentionally channeled through the property to create a calming environment. Every detail asks the same question: What would this animal need to feel safe again?

Shelton is funding the sanctuary not just with money, but with attention and responsibility. He has committed to long-term operational support, ensuring the project doesn’t fade after the initial spotlight. And he is using his public platform—not for applause—but for advocacy.

“With The Evergreen Sanctuary,” Shelton says, “I hope people realize that standing up for animals isn’t charity. It’s responsibility. They can’t speak for themselves.”

Already, the project has inspired conversations across animal welfare communities. Donations have poured in—not because Shelton asked, but because people felt seen by the mission. Veterinarians, trainers, and volunteers from across the country have reached out, eager to be part of something built on patience rather than profit.

What makes this initiative especially powerful is its quietness. There was no flashy launch, no red carpet announcement. Construction began discreetly. The story emerged slowly, almost reluctantly—much like Shelton himself.

At the end of a long day on site, Shelton is often seen sitting on the grass, dogs wandering nearby, no cameras in sight. No speeches. Just presence.

“These animals didn’t fail us,” he says softly. “We failed them. This is how we start to make that right.”

In a world where cruelty often goes unseen and compassion feels rushed, The Evergreen Sanctuary stands as a rare promise—that healing takes time, that love can be rebuilt, and that even the most broken souls deserve peace.

Blake Shelton isn’t just building a sanctuary for dogs.

He’s building a second chance.
